Movers for Mobility is a world-wide initiative to increase the number of Bicycle Friendly Communities in the world, and to give direction to decision makers.

Movers for Mobility will discuss and set a common agenda for the years ahead and meet in network and research projects, as well as during conferences, workshops and in events.

For the first time the Movers for Mobility met during the Velo Mondial Conference March 2006 in Cape Town.

This initiative involves individuals, companies, foundations, associations, networks, local and national governments who are all actively championing greater quality of life in their communities. They are doing this through promoting cycling and walking, through enhancing research, developing methods of planning, boosting political commitment, organizing education, debates and commitment.

Movers for Mobility invites mayors, aldermen and council members to participate in this world-wide endeavour to improve the quality of life in their cities and become a ’Bicycle Friendly Community’. Communities that are bicycle-friendly are seen as places with a high Quality of Life. This often translates into increased property values, business growth and increased tourism. Bicycle-friendly communities are places where people feel safe and comfortable riding their bikes for fun, fitness, and transportation. With more people cycling, communities experience:

  • reduced traffic demands
  • improved air quality
  • greater physical fitness
  • reduced congestion
  • lives saved
  • increased opportunities
  • boost of the economy
  • enhanced recreational opportunities
  • saved city funds
  • enhanced public safety
  • improved health

Movers for Mobility therefore supports the ’Bicycle Friendly Community Campaign’ which is an awards program that recognizes municipalities that actively support bicycling. A Bicycle-Friendly Community provides safe accommodation for cycling and encourages its residents to cycle for transportation and recreation.
